CAMPING

Cub Scout Pack 606 goes camping several times a year.  These are family friendly locations that are approved for Cub Scouts and families through the Gulf Ridge Council.  These are fun and relaxing family events where all family members are encouraged to attend.

A typical campout begins Saturday morning (leaders may arrive the night before) with a flag raising ceremony with the Scouts in uniform.  There is generally some sort of theme or program during the day.  You can count on a fun campfire program that may include Den-provided skits, songs, and run-ons and Smores or an American flag retirement ceremony.  Sunday morning will consist of a flag ceremony and a Scout's Own non-denominational worship service.

Past Pack 606 campouts have included:
Parents, if your skills are rusty or you are apprehensive about camping, we have the perfect kid-free/parent's only 1-day program to help you get up to speed in a relaxed and stress-free environment.  It's called BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation).  Training puts the "outing" in Scouting.  BALOO and other courses are offered periodically around the Council by District volunteers.

Cub Scout Day Camp/Twilight Camp!

Our Cubs have several options to attend fun day camps in the local area during the summer and winter breaks.  See the attached YouTube videos:

Rock Climbing, Rappelling, and Canoeing

Our Scouts enjoy "high" adventures at BSA Camp Brorein.  We have access to trained climbing and repelling instructors through BSA.  Our Scouts have both repelled the tower and learned how to traverse a separate lateral climbing wall.

Have a day on Lake Moon with your Scout in a canoe or kayak.  Launch from the pier and go to the opposite end of the lake, explore wildlife up close on other shores, or race your friends.  Make memories they will not forget!

SCOUTS, START YOUR ENGINES!

Racing in a Cub Scout derby is great fun. You'll get to design your racing vehicle, work with a parent to build it, and see it perform on race day. Win or lose, you'll take pride in having done your best. When you race in a Cub Scout derby, you learn craft skills, the rules of fair play, and good sportsmanship—things you will remember all your life.

Types of Derbies Cub Scout Pack 606 Conducts:  Pinewood derby, raingutter regatta, and space derbies.

Pinewood Derby

The pinewood derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Most packs have a pinewood derby every year. It can be run indoors or outdoors. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race. Lowes and Dremel sponsor an annual "cutout" date where Scouts and Parents can design, cutout, and paint their cars in the store and receive discounts on tools.  Scouts compete for time and themed designs.  Parents and siblings may submit "outlaw" cars that may or may not conform to the normal rules, but are great fun!

Raingutter Regatta

In the raingutter regatta, the wind-powered boats use sailboat designs.  The boats are blown down the channel by their Scouts.

Space Derby

Another popular family-son project is the space derby. It's like the pinewood derby except the models are miniature rockets. The rockets "fly" along a heavy line that hangs in the air. They're driven by propellers powered by rubber bands.

STEM

We provide our Scouts with opportunities to learn and explore various Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math topics through fun activities.  These have included robotics projects, pinewood derby, raingutter regattas, space derbies, Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) sponsored Scout events, and Science campouts.

Out Scouts also have various STEM Nova awards with trained counselors to help the boys explore these areas.

BB Guns, Archery, and Sling Shots

Our Pack goes camping at BSA facilities with accredited ranges and trained range safety officers.  The boys shoot sling shots, BB guns, and bows and arrows.  They receive blocks of instruction on safety and the basics of marksmanship.
