Since 1956



In August 1955, the planning of Troop 62 began at a meeting of the Chewsville Lions Club.  The Troop was organized by November 1955.   
The Troop received it's official charter in April 1956.  Donald Longneck was the first Scoutmaster of Troop 62.  The Troop began holding meetings at the Chewsville Evangelical United Brethren Church on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM with a total of 16 scouts. 
In 1958, scout meetings were being held on Monday nights beginning at 7:30 at the same location with scouts numbering 22. 
The 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam was celebrated on Aug 25-26, 1962.  
Troop  62 attended the Council's Antietam Centennial Camporall held at the campsite south of the Antietam National Battlefield.   
By 1963, Troop 62 had awarded 4 scouts the Rank of Eagle Scout!  The Troop had the honor of sending a scout with the International contingent to Sweden - 1966 World Jamboree.  In 1975, the Troop began meeting at Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, MD. 
In 1976 the Troop celebrated it's 20th Anniversary.  By Troop 62's 20th Anniversary, 17 scouts had earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  In the 20 years since the Troop's inception, the Troop has attended the Council Camp "Sinoquipe" each year!  By 1986, Troop 62 had awarded 25 scouts the rank of Eagle Scout. 
In 1995, the Troop began holding their meetings at the Chewsville Community Center. 
Scouts have had opportunities to camp at the various camporee's held at the council level as well as continuing to attend Summer Camp at "Sinoquipe". 
The Troop sent a crew to Philmont in the years prior to 1976 and again in 1978, 1998, 2006 and in 2011.  
 In 1997 a crew spent time exploring the Grand Canyon and in 1996, 1997 and in 2000 scouts hiked the Seirra's in Nevada! 
In 2007 a crew spent a week at Bayport Scout Reservation
located in Jamaica, Virginia, with access to the Chesapeake Bay. 
A contingent went canoeing at the Northern Tier near Atikokan, Ontario in 2009.  Crews have spent time at Sea Base in 1994, 1997, 2001 and again in 2012.  
The 2012 Sea Base crew of 15 scouts and 4 adults went on the "Bahama Adventure" sailing, snorkeling and fishing for a week! 
Troop 62 continues to attend Summer Camp each summer at the Council Camp "Sinoquipe." 
In 2012, Troop 62 had 35 scouts attend Camp Sinoquipe.
In 2014, two scouts attended the High Adventure trip to Northern Tier.  In 2015, five scouts and one adult attended Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia.  The scouts went mountain biking and kayaking.  In 2017, six scouts and two adults participated in hiking, camping and canoeing in the Marmaduke Trek in New York.  In addition, three scouts and two adults participated in hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, and shooting sports at the Sabattis High Adventure camp in New York. 
As of December 2017, Troop 62 has a very active Troop of 30 Scouts and 18 Adults in Leadership Roles within the Troop.


Between April of 1956 and April of 2012, Troop 62 has awarded the rank of EAGLE SCOUT to 96 scouts!
Since 2012 and December of 2017, Troop 62 has awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to 21 scouts!

Canoeing trips down the Potomac from Paw Paw, WV to Little Orleans, MD,
Valley Forge, PA,
 Cabin Camping at Sinoquipe,
Caledonia State Park, 
Wreath Laying at Arlington Cemetery, 
Catoctin Mountain Park,
Ski Liberty - skiing and tubing,
Tonoloway Rod & Gun Club,
and many more!

   Troop 62 continues to meet at the Chewsville Community Center!  Meetings are held on Monday nights at 7 PM.
